Welcome to Second Grade
August 20, 2018
Dear Parents,
It is with great pleasure that I write this letter. My name is Mrs.Muñoz-Moreno and I will be your child’s second grade teacher this academic year. I have worked in the field of education for the past twenty years with the Los Angeles Archdiocese. However, prior to becoming a teacher, I was a teacher’s assistant for LAUSD. It was during this time that I began my education and embarked on the road to becoming a teacher. Three years ago, I was enrolled in the Masters program at Mount St. Mary’s and I earned my Masters degree. During this academic experience, I dedicated myself in researching various ways of building reading comprehension in all students. The skills that I have learned, I plan to use with my students this school year. As you can see, education plays a very important role in my life.
I have ample experience working with children of all ages; however, working with second grade students has always been my favorite. They are always so eager to try new challenges. As their teacher, it is my goal to help them grow academically, and more importantly, spiritually. This year, your child will prepare to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and First Communion. I have successfully prepared sixteen classes to receive Jesus into their life in my career as an educator. I am looking forward in seeing your children walk in the path of the Lord. Celebrating the sacraments is an important step in their life and your children will have many questions along the way. Please take the time to share your experiences with them as this will allow them to explore their faith and build a stronger understanding of their spiritual journey. I promise to help you along the way.
Academic goals are important, and with the Common Core State Standards, I will be addressing important reading, writing, and math skills. With reading, I will help them continue to build reading fluency, identify important reading elements, and explore various styles of writing like informational text. All readings will be grade based. I encourage you to help your child read at home. Twenty minutes per day is sufficient.
As we continue to work with Common Core State Standards, I will be teaching various math skills in addition and subtraction, and eventually move into multiplication. In kinder and in first grade, your child learned to work with number patterns. I will continue to work with this skill; however, I will be spending a great deal of time on math word problems.
In addition to both math and reading, we will also be doing plenty of writing as a class. I will help your child continue to build clear sentences as they begin to write paragraphs. Identifying main ideas and supporting details is a standard that the class will also be focusing on this school year. Writing will be done daily and it will be integrated in other subjects.
In an effort to strengthen important skills, homework will be given weekly Monday through Thursday due back on Friday. Please check that all assignments are done neatly and that your child’s full name is included. A weekly spelling sheet and math assignments will be sent home every Monday. The spelling sheet will provide your child with a variety of activities your child can choose from. A different activity should be done daily. Make sure that a total of four activities are completed weekly. A spelling test will be given most Fridays. Also, please check our classroom website for clarification.
Finally, I want you to know that one of my most important goals this year is to keep the lines of communication open with you. I am available every day except Mondays and Fridays, to discuss any concerns or questions that you may have. I will be on campus until 4:00p.m. However, I have set up a classroom website which I will be using to communicate important dates, homework, and necessary supplies, as well as to share what is going on in class. The class address can be found here: https://adla.schoolspeak.com, which will also link you to http://mrsm-moreno.weebly.com. Please don’t hesitate to contact me. I will make every effort to get back to you in a timely manner.
September 5 is Back to School Night, and I look forward in meeting you to share other important information.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Muñoz-Moreno
